These are untreated slate but if you want a slight sheen to the boards, apply a light rubbing of edible oil. This also seals the boards to some extent.

Slate is a natural product with an uneven surface which may be ridged or veined, and the edges are deliberately chipped, rather than being perfectly smooth. These factors provide a pleasing rustic appearance which therefore complements a selection of artisan cheeses.
